Ben has always enjoyed space planning to better accomodate the needs of a room and at the same time freshening up the look. He got his start in design from working in a paint store in Calgary for a summer while attending university. That job and his education took him to Ottawa where he worked at Prodecor and atained a degree in commerce with honours from Carleton University. When faux finishing was in vogue, he learned the art through Rittins Studios at a course taught, hands on, in the Casa Loma in Toronto. Upon returning to Calgary, Ben worked for Paint Magic then Walls Alive where he began to run a continuing education series on learning faux finishing in a hands on experience. His interest in faux would culminate in a partnership in a successful faux finishing business called the Faux Zone, installing faux finishes for many of Calgary's top designers and builders.
Ben's background in paint brought him the oportunity to be part owner in Maria Tomas, a home decor shop in Calgary where he introduced and managed the Farrow and Ball paint line and brought much growth and direction to the business at its developmental stages. Ben has worked as an independent solely in his company TBBI for the past year focusing on renovations and new construction - from overlooking the plans to placing the final accessories, and looks forward to bringing his special talent for design to Bespoke. In addition, Ben has always past on his education and experience in design by teaching courses and volunteering on panels through Chinook Learning Services, Bow Valley College and Mount Royal College.
Ben believes that design should reflect personality. He relies heavily on listening to clients needs and bringing options to a design that allow for personal choice. Ben's favorite style is based in traditionbut brought together in a cleaned up contemporary environment with tailored choices that have just enough detail to be interesting. In many ways it is a style that brings sparkle and soft touches to a masculine design asthetic.
One of the simplest things Ben enjoys doing is changing a color scheme because it is such a simple way to make a dramatic change. Over the past years, his judgement of how light and surroundings effects color has become very skilled, as has his knowledge on the psychology of color.
